										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A study led by researchers in the University of Florida College of Pharmacy has found that a pair of popular glucose-lowering medications may have protective effects against the development of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in patients with Type 2 diabetes.</p>
<p>In research published in<em><a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40193118/"> JAMA Neurology</a> </em>on April 7, UF researchers studied Medicare claims data of older adults with Type 2 diabetes to assess the association among glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or GLP-1RAs, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors, or SGLT2is, and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.</p>
<p>The research is supported by funding from the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, both part of the National Institutes of Health.</p>
<p>The data showed a statistically significant association between a lower risk of Alzheimer’s and the use of GLP-1RAs and SGLT2is compared with other glucose-lowering medications. According to the researchers, the findings indicated that the two drugs may have neuroprotective effects for people without diabetes and may help slow the rate of cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s patients.</p>
<p><a href="https://pharmacy.ufl.edu/profile/guo-serena/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Serena Jingchuan Guo, M.D., Ph.D.</a>, an assistant professor of pharmaceutical outcomes and policy and the study’s senior author, said these findings may point to new therapeutic uses for drugs commonly used to treat Type 2 diabetes and obesity.</p>
<p>“It’s exciting that these diabetes medications may offer additional benefits, such as protecting brain health,” Guo said. “Based on our research, there is promising potential for GLP-1RAs and SGLT2is to be considered for Alzheimer’s disease prevention in the future. As use of these drugs continues to expand, it becomes increasingly important to understand their real-world benefits and risks across populations.”</p>
<p>Guo conducted this research in collaboration with <a href="https://endocrinology.medicine.ufl.edu/profile/donahoo-william/">William Donahoo</a><a href="https://endocrinology.medicine.ufl.edu/profile/donahoo-william/">, M.D.</a>, clinical professor and chief of the UF Health Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, and <a href="https://neurology.ufl.edu/profile/dekosky-steven/">Steven T DeKosky</a><a href="https://neurology.ufl.edu/profile/dekosky-steven/">, M.D.</a>, deputy director of the McKnight Brain Institute and professor of Alzheimer&#8217;s research, neurology and neuroscience in the UF Department of Neurology. As the study only included patients with Type 2 diabetes, Guo said next steps include evaluating the effects of the two drugs in broader populations by using recent, real-world data that captures their growing use in clinical settings.</p>
<p>“Future research should focus on identifying heterogeneous treatment effects — specifically, determining which patients are most likely to benefit and who may be at greater risk for safety concerns,” Guo said.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>New research, led by experts at the University of Nottingham, has found that certain types of medication used to treat diabetes may be effective in reducing alcohol use.</p>
<p>The study, which is published in <em>eClinicalMedicine</em>, looked at whether a type of diabetes medication, called GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), could also be used to help people cut down on drinking.</p>
<p>The study was led by Dr Mohsen Subhani, Clinical Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology at the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, in the School of Medicine, at the University of Nottingham. It was funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre.</p>
<p>In the new study, researchers evaluated existing literature on GLP-1 RAs use and the change in alcohol consumption.</p>
<p>They gathered studies up to August 2024 that examined whether GLP-1 RAs affect alcohol use, alcohol-related health problems, hospital visits, and brain reactions to alcohol cues. The team evaluated six articles, including two randomised control trials made up of 88,190 participants, of these 38,740 (43.9%) of participants received GLP-1RA.</p>
<p>Dr Subhani said: “Our findings show that this type of diabetes medication shows promise in reducing alcohol consumption, potentially by targeting the brain’s reward centre, especially in people with a BMI over 30.”</p>
<p>The key findings:</p>
<ul>
<li>In one main study, the medication exenatide did not significantly reduce drinking overall after six months, but people with obesity showed some positive results.</li>
<li>Another study found that people taking the drug dulaglutide were 29% more likely to reduce drinking than those on a placebo.</li>
<li>Observational studies (non-randomised) showed fewer alcohol-related health problems and lower alcohol use in people taking GLP-1 RAs compared to other treatments.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>“</strong>Whilst further research is needed, our findings suggest this could be a potential treatment option in the future for excessive alcohol use and subsequently could lead to a reduction in alcohol-related deaths,” adds Dr Subhani.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p id="first" class="lead">After an intermittent fasting diet intervention, patients achieved complete diabetes remission, defined as an HbA1c (average blood sugar) level of less than 6.5% at least one year after stopping diabetes medication, according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society&#8217;s <em>Journal of Clinical Endocrinology &amp; Metabolism.</em></p>

<p>Intermittent fasting diets have become popular in recent years as an effective weight loss method. With intermittent fasting, you only eat during a specific window of time. Fasting for a certain number of hours each day or eating just one meal a couple of days a week can help your body burn fat. Research shows intermittent fasting can lower your risk of diabetes and heart disease.</p>
<p>&#8220;Type 2 diabetes is not necessarily a permanent, lifelong disease. Diabetes remission is possible if patients lose weight by changing their diet and exercise habits,&#8221; said Dongbo Liu, Ph.D., of Hunan Agricultural University in Changsha, China. &#8220;Our research shows an intermittent fasting, Chinese Medical Nutrition Therapy (CMNT), can lead to diabetes remission in people with type 2 diabetes, and these findings could have a major impact on the over 537 million adults worldwide who suffer from the disease.&#8221;</p>
<p>The researchers conducted a 3-month intermittent fasting diet intervention among 36 people with diabetes and found almost 90% of participants, including those who took blood sugar-lowering agents and insulin, reduced their diabetes medication intake after intermittent fasting. Fifty-five percent of these people experienced diabetes remission, discontinued their diabetes medication and maintained it for at least one year.</p>
<p>The study challenges the conventional view that diabetes remission can only be achieved in those with a shorter diabetes duration (0-6 years). Sixty-five percent of the study participants who achieved diabetes remission had a diabetes duration of more than 6 years (6-11 years).</p>
<p>&#8220;Diabetes medications are costly and a barrier for many patients who are trying to effectively manage their diabetes. Our study saw medication costs decrease by 77% in people with diabetes after intermittent fasting,&#8221; Liu said.</p>
